Shopping
While chain stores have proliferated, turning once-idiosyncratic blocks into versions of
generic strip malls, NYC is still the best American city for shopping. It's not unusual for
shops - especially downtown boutiques - to stay open until 10pm or 11pm.
Downtown
Lower Manhattan is where you'll find across-the-board bargains, as well as more of the
small, stylish boutiques. Downtown's coolest offerings are in NoLita (just east of SoHo),
the East Village and the Lower East Side. SoHo has more expensive and equally fashion-
able stores, while Broadway from Union Sq to Canal St is lined with big retailers like
H&M and Urban Outfitters, as well as dozens of jeans and shoe stores. The streets of Ch-
inatown are filled with knock-off designer handbags, jewelry, perfume and watches. For
coveted designer labels stroll through the Meatpacking District around 14th St and Ninth
Ave.
