JAZZ
Second only to New Orleans, Harlem was an early home to a flourishing jazz scene
and one of its principal beating hearts. The neighborhood fostered greats like Duke
Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk. From bebop to free
improvisation, in classic art-deco clubs and at intimate jam sessions, Harlem and
other important venues scattered throughout the city, especially around the Vil-
lage, continue to foster old-timers and talented newcomers alike. Tune in to WKCR
(89.9 FM) for jazz and especially from 8:20am to 9:30am Monday through Friday
for Phil Schaap's 30-plus-year-old program in which he dazzles listeners with his
encyclopedic knowledge and appreciation for the art form.
