Brooklyn
Of course it's impossible to begin to do justice to Brooklyn's eating options - it's as
much a foodie's paradise as Manhattan. Virtually every ethnic cuisine has a significant
presence somewhere in this borough. As far as neighborhoods close to Manhattan go:
Williamsburg is chockablock with eateries, as are Fifth and Seventh Aves in Park Slope.
Smith St is 'Restaurant Row' in the Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill neighborhoods. At-
lantic Ave, near Court St, has a number of excellent Middle Eastern restaurants and gro-
cery stores.
Tom's Restaurant DINER$
( 718-636-9738; 782 Washington Ave at Sterling Pl, Prospect Heights; 6am-4pm; 2/3 to
Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum) Inspiration for the eponymously named Suzanne Vega
song, this old-school soda fountain diner's specialty is its variety of pancakes (eg mango
walnut). Coffee and cookies are served to those waiting in the line that invariably snakes
out the door on weekend mornings.
Sahadi's SELF-CATERING$
( www.sahadis.com ; 187 Atlantic Ave btwn Court & Clinton Sts, Boerum Hill; 9am-7pm Mon-Sat;
; 2/3, 4/5 to Borough Hall) The smell of fresh-roasted coffee and spices greets you as
you enter this beloved Middle Eastern delicacies shop. The olive bar boasts two-dozen
options and enough breads, cheeses, nuts and hummus to fulfill the self-catering needs of
a whole battalion.
Mile End DELI$
( www.mileendbrooklyn.com ; 97A Hoyt St, Boerum Hill; sandwiches $8-12; 8am-4pm Mon & Tue,
8am-11pm Wed-Sat, 10am-10pm Sun; A/C/G to Hoyt Schermerhorn Sts) Mile End is small,
like its portions, but big on flavors. Try a smoked beef brisket on rye with mustard ($12)
- the bread is sticky soft and the meat will melt in your mouth. The only buzzkill is the
extra $1.50 charge for a pickle.
