Originally built for sailors (obvious after one look at the cabin-sized rooms), the Jane
became a temporary refuge for survivors of the
Titanic,
then a YMCA and a rock-and-
roll venue. The single-bunk rooms feature flat-screen TVs and the communal showers
are more than adequate.

Housed in a landmark brownstone in Chelsea, the
European-style, 20-room Chelsea Lodge is a super deal. Space is tight, so you won't get
more than a bed, with a TV plopped on an old wooden cabinet. There are showers and
sinks in rooms, but toilets are down the hall. Six suite rooms have private bathrooms, and
two come with private garden access.

Housed in a lone 19th-century, five-story townhouse
on busy 23rd St, this 14-room B&B is a Chelsea gem. The rooms are big and welcoming,
with fanciful fabrics on big brass or poster beds and an ol' piano for you to play boogie-
woogie on in the lounge, and a 2nd-floor, all-Victorian library that doubles as a breakfast
room.

Housed in a prewar
building that blends in with the other fine brownstones on the block, a stay at the Larch-
mont is about location. The carpeted rooms are basic and in need of updating, as are the
communal baths, but it's not a bad deal for the price.
