Staten Island
While many New Yorkers will say that Staten Island has more in common with its neigh-
bor, New Jersey, because of its suburban house and car cultures, there are compelling reas-
ons to include this borough in your urban explorations. First and foremost is the Staten Is-
land Ferry ( www.siferry.com ; Whitehall Terminal at Whitehall & South Sts; 24hr; 1 to South
Ferry) , which shuttles blasé commuters to work, while offering breathtaking views
of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline (the worlds' largest Ferris wheel is to
be built amid a large shopping and retail complex near the ferry terminal). Not far from
the ferry station on the Staten Island side is the Richmond County Bank Ballpark (75
Richmond Terrace, Staten Island) , home to the minor-league Staten Island Yankees, as well as
the hipper-than-ever neighborhood of St George.
