Queens
There is no longer any typical Queens accent - think Archie and Edith Bunker in All in
the Family . You're as likely to hear Bengali and Spanish - 170 languages are spoken - in
this, the largest (282 sq miles) and most ethnically diverse county in the country. There
are few of the tree-lined brownstone streets you find in Brooklyn, and the majority of the
neighborhoods, architecturally speaking at least, do not befit this borough's grand name.
However, because close to half its 2.3 million residents were born abroad, parts of
Queens are endlessly reconstituting themselves, creating a vibrant and heady alternative
universe to Manhattan. It's also home to two major airports, the Mets, a hip modern-art
scene, miles of excellent beaches in the Rockaways and walking trails in the Gateway
National Recreation Area ( www.nps.gov/gate ) , and a wildlife refuge in Jamaica Bay, only
minutes from JFK airport. The Queens Historical Society ( 718-939-0647;
www.queenshistoricalsociety.org ) offers tours through many areas of the massive borough.
