Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens & Red Hook NEIGHBORHOOD
These neighborhoods, home to a mix of families, mostly Italian, who have lived here for
generations, and former Manhattanites looking for a real life after the city, are full of
tree-lined streets with rows of attractively restored brownstones. Smith St and Court St
are the two main arteries connecting to the most southerly area of the three, Carroll Gar-
dens. The former is known as 'restaurant row,' while the latter has more of the old-
school groceries, bakeries and red-sauce restaurants. Further west is Red Hook , a water-
front area with cobblestone streets and hulking industrial buildings. Though it's a bit of a
hike from the subway line, the formerly gritty area is now home to a handful of bars and
eateries, as well as a massive waterfront branch of Fairway (

Dumbo NEIGHBORHOOD
Dumbo's nickname is an acronym for its location: 'Down Under the Manhattan−Brook-
lyn Bridge Overpass,' and while this north Brooklyn slice of waterfront used to be
strictly for industry, it's now the domain of high-end condos, furniture shops and art gal-
leries. Several highly regarded performing arts spaces are located in the cobblestone
streets and the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park hugs the waterfront and offers picture-
postcard Manhattan views.
The Bronx
This 42-sq-mile borough to the north of Manhattan has several claims to fame: the Yan-
kees, fondly known as the Bronx Bombers, who can be seen in all their pinstriped glory
at the new Yankee Stadium ( 718-508-3917, 718-293-6000; www.yankees.com ; E 161st St at
River Ave; tours $20; call for hrs; B/D, 4 to 161st St-Yankee Stadium) in spring and sum-
mer; the 'real' Little Italy, namely Belmont ( www.arthuravenuebronx.com ) , where bustling
stretches of Arthur and Belmont Aves burst with Italian gourmet markets and eateries;
and a super-sized attitude that's been mythologized in Hollywood movies from The God-
