College) This spectacular art collection sits in a mansion built by Henry Clay Frick in
1914; it's a shame that the 2nd floor of the residence isn't open for viewing. The 12
richly furnished rooms on the ground floor display paintings by Titian, Vermeer, El
Greco, Goya and other masters. Perhaps the best asset here is that it's rarely crowded,
providing a welcome break from the swarms of gawkers at larger museums, especially
on weekends.

sculpture in its own right, architect Frank Lloyd Wright's building almost overshadows
the collection of 20th century art that it houses. Completed in 1959, the inverted ziggurat
structure was derided by some critics, but it was hailed by others as an architectural icon.
Stroll its sweeping spiral staircase to view 20th-century masterpieces by Picasso, Pol-
lock, Chagall, Kandinsky and others.

Housed in a stately and elegant Fifth Ave mansion, the Neue showcases German and
Austrian artists, with impressive works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Café Sa-
barsky alone is worth a visit for its fin de siècle European vibe, rich desserts (apple stru-
del $8) and cabaret performances on Thursday nights ($45).
Whitney Museum of American Art MUSEUM

centrates on American works of art, specializing in 20th-century and contemporary art,
with works by Hopper, Pollock and Rothko, as well as special shows, such as the much-
ballyhooed Biennial. In 2015, the Whitney is moving to Gansevoort St in the Meatpack-
ing District.
