Herald Square SQUARE

(cnr Broadway, Sixth Ave & 34th St; B/D/F/M, N/Q/R to 34th St-Herald Sq) This crowded
convergence of Broadway, Sixth Ave and 34th St is best known as the home of Macy's
MAP GOOGLE MAP department store, where you can still ride some of the remaining
original wooden elevators to floors ranging from home furnishings to lingerie. But the
busy square gets its name from a long-defunct newspaper, the Herald, and the small,
leafy park here bustles during business hours. In order to cut down on some of the area
gridlock, Broadway, from 33rd to 35th Sts has been turned into a pedestrian plaza.
West of Herald Sq, the Garment District has most of New York's fashion design of-
fices, and while not much clothing is actually made here anymore, for anyone into paw-
ing through dreamy selections of fabrics, buttons, sequins, lace and zippers it is the place
to shop.
From 31st St to 36th St, between Broadway and Fifth Ave, Koreatown is an interest-
ing and lively neighborhood with an ever-expanding number of good restaurants and au-
thentic karaoke spots.
Hell's Kitchen NEIGHBORHOOD
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Clinton;) For years, the far west side of Midtown was a working-class district of tene-
ments and food warehouses known as Hell's Kitchen - supposedly its name was
muttered by a cop in reaction to a riot in the neighborhood in 1881. A 1990s economic
boom seriously altered the character and developers reverted to using the cleaned-up
name, Clinton, a moniker originating from the 1950s; locals are split on usage. New,
primarily inexpensive ethnic restaurants exploded along Ninth and Tenth Aves between
about 37th and 55th Sts. Thrift-store lovers should visit the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market
