In-Depth Information
railroad track has been transformed into a long ribbon of parkland. Spanning from Gan-
sevoort St to W 34th St, there's finally some greenery amid the asphalt jungle. Only three
stories above the streetscape, this thoughtfully and carefully designed mix of contempor-
ary, industrial and natural elements is nevertheless a refuge and escape from the ordinary.
A glass-front amphitheater with bleacher-like seating sits just above 10th Ave - bring
some food and join local workers on their lunch break. Entrances are at Gansevoort,
14th, 16th, 18th, 20th and 30th Sts; elevator access at all but 18th St) The third and final
phase will bend closer to the Hudson at 34th St but it's final status is dependent on the
ongoing massive redevelopment of the adjoining Hudson Rail Yards. The Whitney Mu-
seum of American Art MAP GOOGLE MAP (long located on the Upper East Side),
will relocate to its Renzo Piano-designed home situated between the High Line and the
Hudson River in 2015.
Chelsea
This 'hood is popular for two main attractions: one, the parade of gorgeous gay men
(known affectionately as 'Chelsea boys') who roam Eighth Ave, darting from gyms to
trendy happy hours; and two, it's one of the hubs of the city's art-gallery scene − it's cur-
rently home to nearly 200 modern-art exhibition spaces, most of which are clustered west
of Tenth Ave. Find specific galleries at www.westchelseaarts.com .
