To reach Mackinac Island, MI, three passenger ferry companies - Arnold Line (

www.sheplersferry.com ) and Star Line ( 800-638-9892; www.mackinacferry.com ) - op-
erate out of both Mackinaw City and St Ignace, MI.
Lake Express ( www.lake-express.com ) crosses Lake Michigan between Milwaukee,
WI, and Muskegon, MI.
South
North Carolina Ferry System ( 800-293-3779; www.outer-banks.com/ferry ) runs fer-
ries throughout the Outer Banks.
Bus
Greyhound ( 800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com ) is the major long-distance carrier,
plowing along an extensive network throughout the USA, as well as to/from Canada. As a
rule, buses are reliable, clean(ish) and comfortable, with air-conditioning, barely reclining
seats, onboard lavatories and a no-smoking policy. Several buses have wi-fi. While some
shorter-route buses run express, most stop every 50 to 100 miles to pick up passengers,
and long-distance buses stop for meal breaks and driver changes.

east cities, including NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Newark and Washington, DC.
DC2NY ( 202-332-2691; www.dc2ny.com ) Cheap fares between the nation's capital
and NYC.
Go Buses ( www.gobuses.com ) Plies the Boston-to-NYC route.
Megabus ( 877-462-6342; www.megabus.com ) Bolt Bus' main competitor, with routes
between main cities in the Northeast and also the Midwest, radiating from hubs in NYC or
Chicago. Fares can be quite low; tickets booked online only.
Peter Pan Buslines ( 800-343-9999; www.peterpanbus.com ) Serves 54 destinations
in the Northeast, as far north as Concord, NH, and as far south as Washington, DC.
Trailways ( 703-691-3052; www.trailways.com ) Mostly in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic
states; may not be as useful as Greyhound for long trips, but fares can be competitive on
shorter routes.
