Air Passes
International travelers who plan on doing a lot of flying might consider buying a North
American air pass. Passes are normally available only to non-North American citizens,
and they must be purchased in conjunction with an international ticket. Conditions and
cost structures can be complicated, but all passes include a certain number of domestic
flights (from two to 10) that typically must be used within a 60-day period. Two of the
biggest airline networks offering air passes are Star Alliance ( www.staralliance.com ) and
One World ( www.oneworld.com ).
Bicycle
Regional bicycle touring is popular: winding back roads and scenic coastlines make for
great itineraries. Many cities (including New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis and Boston)
also have designated bike routes. Renting a bicycle is easy throughout the eastern USA.
Some things to keep in mind:
» Cyclists must follow the same rules of the road as vehicles, but don't expect drivers to
always respect your right of way.
» Helmets are mandatory for cyclists in some states and towns (though there is no federal
law that requires it). It usually applies to children under age 18. The Bicycle Helmet
Safety Institute ( www.bhsi.org/mandator.htm ) has a thorough, state-by-state list of local
rules.
