» To drive across the US-Canadian border, you'll need the vehicle's registration papers,
proof of liability insurance and your home driver's license.
» Rental cars can usually be driven across the border either way, but make sure your rent-
al agreement says so in case you are questioned by border officials.
» If your papers are in order, border crossing is usually fast and easy, but occasionally the
authorities of either country decide to search a car thoroughly .
Train
Amtrak ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com ) and VIA Rail Canada ( www.viarail.ca ) run
daily services between Montreal and New York (11 hours), and Toronto and New York via
Niagara Falls (13 hours total). Customs inspections happen at the border, not upon board-
ing.
Sea
Several cities on the East Coast are cruise-ship hubs, including New York City, Boston,
New Orleans and Charleston, SC. Florida's ports harbor the most ships of all, particularly
Miami, followed by Port Canaveral and Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale).
You can also travel to and from the eastern USA on a freighter. These vessels usually
carry between three and 12 passengers and, though considerably less luxurious than
cruise ships, give a salty taste of life at sea.

TRAVELING TO CANADA
It's easy to journey across the border to Canada from the Eastern USA and quite
