In-Depth Information
( www.thecometcafe.com ; 1947 N Farwell Ave; mains $8-12; 10am-10pm Mon-Fri, from 9am Sat &
Sun; ) Students, young families, older couples and bearded, tattooed types pile in to the
rock-and-roll Comet for gravy-smothered meatloaf, mac 'n' cheese, vegan gyros and
hangover brunch dishes. It's a craft-beer-pouring bar on one side, and retro-boothed diner
on the other. Be sure to try one of the giant cupcakes for dessert.
Distil AMERICAN$$$
( 414-220-9411; www.distilmilwaukee.com ; 722 N Milwaukee St; mains $10-20; from 5pm
Mon-Sat) It's all about artisanal fare at dark, coppery Distil. The menu focuses on cheese
and charcuterie (burgers, too). Heck, the beef comes from the owner's cow. Mixologists
stir up Corpse Revivers and Sidecars to accompany the food.
Drinking & Entertainment
Bars
Milwaukee has the second most bars per capita in the country (a hair behind New Or-
leans). Several pour around N Water and E State Sts downtown and in the Third Ward.
Drinkeries stay open to 2am.
Best Place BAR
( www.bestplacemilwaukee.com ; 901 W Juneau Ave; noon-midnight Thu-Sat, to 6pm Sun) Join
the locals knocking back beers and massive whiskey pours at this small tavern in the
former Pabst Brewery headquarters. A fireplace warms the cozy, dark-wood room; ori-
ginal murals depicting Pabst's history adorn the walls. Staff give daily tours ($8, includ-
ing a 16oz Pabst or Schlitz tap brew) that explore the building.
Uber Tap Room BAR
( www.ubertaproom.com ; 1048 N Old 3rd St; 11am-8pm Sun-Wed, to 10pm Thu, to 11pm Fri & Sat)
It's touristy, in the thick of Old World 3rd St and attached to the Wisconsin Cheese Mart,
but it's a great place to sample local fare. Thirty Wisconsin beers flow from the taps, and
cheese from the state's dairy bounty accompanies. Themed plates (spicy cheeses, stinky
cheeses etc) cost $8 to $12.
Palm Tavern BAR
(2989 S Kinnickinnic Ave; from 5pm Mon-Sat, from 7pm Sun) Located in the fresh south-side
neighborhood of Bay View, this warm, jazzy little bar has a mammoth selection of beer
(heavy on the Belgians) and single-malt Scotches.
