Marquette
From Munising, Hwy 28 heads west and hugs Lake Superior. This beautiful stretch of
highway has lots of beaches, roadside parks and rest areas where you can pull over and
enjoy the scenery. Within 45 miles you'll reach outdoorsy, oft-snowy Marquette.
Stop at the log-lodge visitor center ( www.travelmarquettemichigan.com ; 2201 US 41;
9am-5pm) as you enter the city for brochures on local hiking trails and waterfalls.
The easy Sugarloaf Mountain Trail and the harder, wildernesslike Hogsback Moun-
tain Trail offer panoramic views. Both are reached from County Rd 550, just north of
Marquette. In the city, the high bluffs of Presque Isle Park make a great place to catch
the sunset. The Noquemanon Trail Network ( www.noquetrails.org ) is highly recommended
for mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Kayaking is awesome in the area; Down-
wind Sports ( www.downwindsports.com ; 514 N Third St; 10am-7pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat,
11am-3pm Sun) has the lowdown on it, as well as fly fishing, surfing, ice climbing and oth-
er adventures.
Marquette is the perfect place to stay put for a few days to explore the central UP.
