In-Depth Information
Walloon Lake. Hemingway buffs often tour the area to view the places that made
their way into his writing.
First up: Horton Bay. As you head north on US 31, past yacht-filled Charlevoix,
look for Boyne City Rd veering off to the east. It skirts Lake Charlevoix and eventu-
ally arrives at the Horton Bay General Store ( 231-582-7827;
www.hortonbaygeneralstore.com ; 05115 Boyne City Rd; 8am-2pm mid-May-mid-Oct) . Heming-
way fans will recognize the building, with its 'high false front,' from his short story
'Up in Michigan.' For the mother lode of Hemingway books and souvenirs, pop into
the Red Fox Inn Bookstore (05156 Boyne City Rd; late May-early Sep) next door.
Further up Hwy 31 in Petoskey, you can see the Hemingway collection at the
Little Traverse History Museum ( 231-347-2620; www.petoskeymuseum.org ; 100 Depot Ct;
admission $3; 10am-4pm Mon-Fri, from 1pm Sat late May-mid-Oct) , including rare first-edi-
tion books that the author autographed for a friend when he visited in 1947. After-
ward, toss back a drink at City Park Grill ( 231-347-0101; www.cityparkgrill.com ; 432 E
Lake St; 11:30am-midnight) , where Hemingway was a regular.

Straits of Mackinac
This region, between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, features a long history of forts
and fudge shops. Car-free Mackinac Island is Michigan's premier tourist draw.
One of the most spectacular sights in the area is the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge
(known locally as 'Big Mac'), which spans the Straits of Mackinac. The $4 toll is worth
every penny as the views from the bridge, which include two Great Lakes, two peninsu-
las and hundreds of islands, are second to none in Michigan.
And remember: despite the spelling, it's pronounced mac -in-aw.
Mackinaw City
At the south end of Mackinac Bridge, bordering I-75, is touristy Mackinaw City. It
serves mainly as a jump-off point to Mackinac Island, but it does have a couple of inter-
esting sights.
Next to the bridge (its visitor center is actually beneath the bridge) is Colonial
Michilimackinac (
