Plot out your walk in the woods with Michigan Trail Maps ( www.michigantrailmaps.com ) , a
free resource with more than 100 trail guides. Search by county, trail length or
activity (eg birding), then download and print the high-quality maps as pdfs. So far
the trails covered are on the Lower Peninsula, but Upper Peninsula treks are re-
portedly in the works.
Charlevoix & Petoskey
These two towns hold several Hemingway sights. They're also where Michigan's upper -
crusters maintain summer homes. The downtown areas of both places have gourmet res-
taurants and high-class shops, and the marinas are filled with yachts.
In Petoskey, Stafford's Perry Hotel ( 231-347-4000; www.staffords.com ; Bay at Lewis St;
r $149-269; ) is a grand historic place in which to stay. Petoskey State Park (
231-347-2311; 2475 Hwy 119; tent & RV sites $27-29) is north along Hwy 119 and has a beauti-
ful beach. Look for indigenous Petoskey stones, which are honeycomb-patterned frag-
ments of ancient coral. From here, Hwy 119 (aka the Tunnel of Trees scenic route ) dips
and curves through thick forest as it rolls north along a sublime bluff, en route to the
Straits of Mackinac.

A number of writers have ties to northwest Michigan, but none is as famous as Ern-
est Hemingway, who spent the summers of his youth at his family's cottage on
