Sawyer Point (a nifty park dotted by whimsical monuments and flying pigs) to Newport,
Kentucky.
Covington & Newport
Covington and Newport, Kentucky, are sort of suburbs of Cincinnati, just over the river
from downtown. Newport is to the east and known for its massive Newport on the
Levee ( www.newportonthelevee.com ) restaurant and shopping complex. Covington lies to
the west and its MainStrasse ( www.mainstrasse.org ) quarter is filled with funky restaurants
and bars in the neighborhood's 19th-century brick row houses. Antebellum mansions
fringe Riverside Dr, and old paddle-wheel boats tie up along the water's edge.
Newport Aquarium AQUARIUM

of other razor-toothed fish at Newport's large, well-regarded facility.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
VENT HAVEN VENTRILOQUIST MUSEUM
Jeepers creepers! When you first glimpse the roomful of goggle-eyed wooden
heads staring mutely into space, try not to run screaming for the door. (If you've
seen the film Magic, you know what dummies are capable of.) Local William
Shakespeare Berger started the Vent Haven Museum ( 859-341-0461;
www.venthavenmuseum.com ; 33 W Maple Ave; admission $5; by appointment May-Sep) after
amassing a collection of some 700 dolls. Today Jacko the red-fezzed monkey,
turtleneck-clad Woody DeForest and the rest of the crew sit silently throughout
three buildings.
Lest you think this form of entertainment is history, stop by in July, when the an-
nual conVENTion takes place and 400 ventriloquists arrive with their talkative
wooden pals. The museum is located in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, about 4 miles
southwest of Covington off I-71/75.
