WORTH A TRIP
MALABAR FARM
What do Bogie, Bacall and Johnny Appleseed have in common? They've all spent
time at Malabar Farm State Park ( www.malabarfarm.org ) . There's a lot going on
here: hiking and horse trails; pond fishing (ask for a free rod at the visitor center);
tours of Pulitzer-winner Louis Bromfield's home (where Humphrey Bogart and
Lauren Bacall got married); monthly barn dances; a farmhouse hostel (
www.hiusa.org/lucas ) ; and a fine restaurant ( 11am-8pm Tue-Sun) that uses ingredients
from the grounds. Malabar is 30 miles west of Millersburg via Hwy 39.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Columbus
Ohio's capital city is like the blind date your mom arranges - average looking, restrained
personality, but solid and affable. Better yet, she's easy on the wallet, an influence from
Ohio State University's 55,000 students (the university is the nation's second largest). A
substantial gay population has taken up residence in Columbus in recent years.
