A singular attraction is the 352ft Doric column known as Perry's Victory and Interna-
tional Peace Memorial ( www.nps.gov/pevi ; admission $3; 10am-7pm) . Climb to the ob-
servation deck for views of the battle site and, on a good day, Canada.

10am-4pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat & Sun) has information on activities and lodging. Ash-
ley's Island House ( 419-285-2844; www.ashleysislandhouse.com ; 557 Catawba Ave; r with/
without bath from $100/70; ) is a 13-room B&B, where naval officers stayed in the
late 1800s. The Beer Barrel Saloon ( www.beerbarrelpib.com ; Delaware Ave;

has plenty of space for imbibing - its bar is 406ft long.
Cabs and tour buses serve the island, though cycling is a fine way to get around. Two
ferry companies make the 20-minute trip regularly from the mainland. Jet Express (
800-245-1538; www.jet-express.com ) runs passenger-only boats direct to Put In Bay from
Port Clinton (one way adult/child $15/2.50) almost hourly. It also departs from Sandusky
($19.50/5.50), stopping at Kelleys Island en route. Leave your car in the lot (per day $10)
at either dock. Miller Boatline ( 800-500-2421; www.millerferry.com ) operates a vehicle
ferry that is the cheapest option, departing from further-flung Catawba (one way adult/
child $7/1.50, car $15) every 30 minutes. It also cruises to Middle Bass Island , a good
day trip from South Bass, offering nature and quiet.
Kelleys Island
Peaceful and green, Kelleys Island is a popular weekend escape, especially for families.
It has pretty 19th-century buildings, Native American pictographs, a good beach and gla-
cial grooves raked through its landscape. Even its old limestone quarries are scenic.
The Chamber of Commerce ( 419-746-2360; www.kelleysislandchamber.com ; Seaway
Marina Bldg; 9:30am-4pm) , by the ferry dock, has information on accommodations and
activities - hiking, camping, kayaking and fishing are popular. The Village , the island's
small commercial center, has places to eat, drink, shop and rent bicycles - the recom-
mended way to sightsee.
Kelleys Island Ferry ( 419-798-9763; www.kelleysislandferry.com ) departs from the wee
village of Marblehead (one way adult/child $9.50/6, car $15). The crossing takes about
20 minutes and leaves hourly (more frequently in summer). Jet Express (
800-245-1538; www.jet-express.com ) departs from Sandusky (one way adult/child $15/4.50,
no cars) and goes onward to Put In Bay on South Bass Island (island-hopping one way
$22/6.50, no cars).
