DON'T MISS
CEDAR POINT'S RAGING ROLLER COASTERS
Cedar Point Amusement Park ( 419-627-2350; www.cedarpoint.com ; adult/child $55/30;
10am-10pm, closed Nov-mid-May) regularly wins the 'world's best amusement park'
award, chosen each year by the public, which goes wild for the venue's 16
adrenaline-pumping roller coasters. Stomach-droppers include the Top Thrill Drag-
ster, one of the globe's tallest and fastest rides. It climbs 420ft into the air before
plunging and whipping around at 120mph. Meanwhile, the winglike GateKeeper
loops, corkscrews and dangles riders from the world's highest inversion (meaning
you're upside down a lot). If those and the 14 other coasters aren't enough to keep
you occupied, the surrounding area has a nice beach, a water park and a slew of
old-fashioned, cotton-candy-fueled attractions. It's about 6 miles from Sandusky.
Buying tickets in advance online saves money. Parking costs $15.

Sandusky , long a port, now serves as the jump-off point to the Erie Islands and a

www.shoresandislands.com ; 4424 Milan Rd; 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat, 9am-4pm Sun)
provides lodging and ferry information. Loads of chain motels line the highways heading
into town.
Bass Islands
In 1812's Battle of Lake Erie, Admiral Perry met the enemy English fleet near South
Bass Island . His victory ensured that all the lands south of the Great Lakes became US,
not Canadian, territory. But history is all but forgotten on a summer weekend in packed
Put In Bay , the island's main town and a party place full of boaters, restaurants and
