cross the bridge to Louisville, Kentucky, where the tonsil-singeing native bourbon
awaits…
Scenic Hwy 62 heads west and leads to the Lincoln Hills and southern Indiana's lime-
stone caves. A plunge into Marengo Cave ( 812-365-2705; www.marengocave.com ;
9am-6pm Jun-Aug, to 5pm Sep-May) , north on Hwy 66, is highly recommended. It has a
40-minute tour (adult/child $14/8), 70-minute tour ($16/9) or combination tour ($24/13)
walking past stalagmites and other ancient formations. The same group operates Cave
Country Canoes ( www.cavecountrycanoes.com ; May-Oct) in nearby Milltown, with half-
day ($25), full-day ($28) or longer trips on the scenic Blue River; keep an eye out for
river otters and rare hellbender salamanders.
Four miles south of Dale, off I-64, is the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (
812-937-4541; www.nps.gov/libo ; adult/child/family $3/free/$5; 8am-5pm) , where young
Abe lived from age seven to 21. This isolated site also includes admission to a working
pioneer farm (
8am-5pm late May-Aug) .
New Harmony
In southwest Indiana, the Wabash River forms the border with Illinois. Beside it, south of
I-64, captivating New Harmony is the site of two early communal-living experiments
and is worth a visit. In the early 19th century a German Christian sect, the Harmonists,
developed a sophisticated town here while awaiting the Second Coming. Later, the Brit-
ish utopian Robert Owen acquired the town. Learn more and pick up a walking-tour map
at the angular Atheneum Visitors Center (
812-682-4474; www.usi.edu/hnh ; 401 N Arthur
St; 9:30am-5pm) .
Today New Harmony retains an air of contemplation, if not otherworldliness, which
you can experience at its newer attractions, such as the templelike Roofless Church and
the Labyrinth, a maze symbolizing the spirit's quest. The town has a couple of guest-
houses and camping at Harmonie State Park ( 812-682-4821; campsites $12-29) . Pop in-
to Main Cafe (508 Main St; mains $4-7; 5:30am-1pm Mon-Fri) for a ham, bean and corn-
bread lunch, but save room for the coconut cream pie.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Northern Indiana
The truck-laden I-80/I-90 tollways cut across Indiana's northern section. Parallel US 20
is slower and cheaper, but not much more attractive.
