Southern Indiana
The pretty hills, caves, rivers and utopian history of southern Indiana mark it as a com-
pletely different region from the flat and industrialized north.
Ohio River
The Indiana segment of the 981-mile Ohio River marks the state's southern border. From
tiny Aurora, in the southeastern corner of the state, Hwys 56, 156, 62 and 66, known col-
lectively as the Ohio River Scenic Route , wind through a varied landscape.
Coming from the east, a perfect place to stop is little Madison , a well-preserved river
settlement from the mid-19th century where architectural beauties beckon genteelly from
the streets. At the visitor center ( 812-265-2956; www.visitmadison.org ; 601 W First St;
9am-5pm Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm Sat, 11am-5pm Sun) , pick up a walking-tour brochure, which will
lead you by notable landmarks.
Madison has motels around its edges, as well as several B&Bs. Main St lines up nu-
merous places for a bite, interspersed with antique stores. Large, wooded Clifty Falls
State Park ( 812-273-8885; tent & RV sites $12-36) , off Hwy 56 and a couple of miles
west of town, has camping, hiking trails, views and waterfalls.
In Clarksville, Falls of the Ohio State Park ( 812-280-9970; www.fallsoftheohio.org ;
201 W Riverside Dr) has only rapids, no falls, but is of interest for its 386-million-year-old
fossil beds. The interpretive center (adult/child $5/2; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, from 1pm Sun)
explains it all. Quench your thirst in adjacent New Albany, home to New Albanian
