Hotels cost more and are usually full during race weeks in May, July and August. Add
17% tax to the prices listed here. Look for low-cost motels off I-465, the freeway that
circles Indianapolis.
Indy Hostel HOSTEL$

small, friendly hostel has four dorm rooms in configurations from four to six beds. One
room is for females only, while the others are mixed. There are also a couple of private
rooms. The Monon Trail hiking/cycling path runs beside the property. It's located by
Broad Ripple, so it's a bit of a haul from downtown (on bus 17).
Hilton Garden Inn HOTEL$$$

$150-190; ) The century-old neoclassical architecture, plush beds, free omelet-
laden breakfast and downtown location right by Monument Circle make this a fine chain-
hotel choice. Parking is $25.
Stone Soup B&B$$$

) The nine rooms sprawl throughout a rambling, antique-filled house. It's a bit ram-
shackle, but it has its charm. The less-expensive rooms share a bath.
Alexander HOTEL$$$

209-room Alexander is all about art. Forty original works decorate the lobby; the Indi-
anapolis Museum of Art curates the contemporary collection (the public is welcome to
browse). The mod rooms have dark-wood floors and, of course, cool wall art. It's a block
from the basketball arena, and it's where visiting teams typically stay. Parking is $27.
Eating
Massachusetts Ave (Mass Ave; www.discovermassave.com ) , by downtown, is bounteous
when the stomach growls. Broad Ripple ( www.discoverbroadripplevillage.com ) , 7 miles
north, has pubs, cafes and ethnic eateries.
Mug 'N' Bun AMERICAN$
