In-Depth Information
Monument Circle
MONUMENT, MUSEUM
(1 Monument Circle)
At Monument Circle the city center is marked by the jaw-dropping
284ft
Soldiers & Sailors Monument
. For a bizarre (and cramped) experience, take the
elevator ($2) to the top. Beneath is the
Civil War Museum
( 10:30am-5:30pm Wed-Sun)
, which neatly outlines the conflict and Indiana's abolition position. A few blocks
north, the
World War Memorial
(cnr Vermont & Meridian Sts)
is another impressively beefy
monument.
Sun King Brewing
BREWERY
(

;
135 N College Ave; 4-7pm Thu, noon-7pm Fri, 1-5pm Sat)
Join Indy's young and hip, slurping free beers at Sun King's unvarnished downtown
warehouse. You get six tastings (about the equivalent of a pint overall) in plastic cups, in-
cluding year-round brews such as Osiris Pale Ale and seasonals like a pepper-spiced am-
ber ale.
Indiana Medical History Museum
MUSEUM
( 317-635-7329;
www.imhm.org
; 3045 W Vermont St; adult/child $7/3; 10am-3pm Thu-Sat)
When you think 'horror movie insane asylum,' this century-old state psychiatric hospital
is exactly what you envision. Guided tours roam the former pathology lab, from the cold-
slabbed autopsy room to the eerie specimen room filled with brains in jars. It's a few
miles west of White River park.
Bicycle Garage Indy
BICYCLE RENTAL
(
www.bgindy.com
; 222 E Market St; rental per hr/day $15/40)
Cycling has really taken off in
the city. Hop on the Cultural Trail in front of the shop; it eventually connects to the
Monon Trail greenway. Rates include helmet, lock and map.
Festivals
The city celebrates the Indy 500 throughout May with the
500 Festival
(
www.500festival.com
;
tickets from $7)
. Events include a race-car drivers' parade and a com-
munity shindig at the racetrack.
