White River State Park PARK
( http://inwhiteriver.wrsp.in.gov ) The expansive park, located at downtown's edge, contains
several worthwhile sights. The adobe Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians &
Western Art ( 317-636-9378; www.eiteljorg.org ; 500 W Washington St; adult/child $10/6;
10am-5pm Mon-Sat, from noon Sun) features Native American basketry, pots and masks, as
well as several paintings by Frederic Remington and Georgia O'Keeffe. Other park high-
lights include an atmospheric minor-league baseball stadium , a zoo , a canal walk ,
gardens and a science museum .
The NCAA Hall of Champions ( 800-735-6222; www.ncaahallofchampions.org ; 700 W
Washington St; adult/child $5/3; 10am-5pm Tue-Sat, from noon Sun) is also here, and re-
veals the country's fascination with college sports. Interactive exhibits let you shoot free
throws or climb onto a swimming platform à la Michael Phelps.
Indianapolis Museum of Art MUSEUM, GARDENS

Thu & Fri, noon-5pm Sun) The museum has a terrific collection of European art (es-
pecially Turner and post-impressionists), African tribal art, South Pacific art and Chinese
works. The complex also includes Oldfields - Lilly House & Gardens , where you can
tour the 22-room mansion and flowery grounds of the Lilly pharmaceutical family, and
Fairbanks Art & Nature Park , with eye-popping mod sculptures set amid 100 acres of
woodlands.
Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library MUSEUM
( www.vonnegutlibrary.org ; 340 N Senate Ave; noon-5pm Thu-Tue) Author Kurt Von-
negut was born and raised in Indy, and this humble museum pays homage with displays
including his Pall Mall cigarettes, Purple Heart medal and box of hilarious rejection let-
ters from publishers. The library also replicates his office, complete with checkerboard
carpet, red-rooster lamp and blue Coronamatic typewriter. You're welcome to sit at the
desk and type Kurt a note.
Rhythm! Discovery Center MUSEUM
( www.rhythmdiscoverycenter.org ; 110 W Washington St; adult/child $9/6; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat,
from noon Sun) Bang drums, gongs, xylophones and exotic percussive instruments from
around the globe at this hidden gem downtown. Kids love the interactive whomping.
Adults appreciate the exhibits of famous drummers' gear and the soundproof, drum-kit-
ted studio where you can unleash (and record) your inner Neil Peart.
