» CTA buses go everywhere from early morning until late evening.
» The standard fare per train is $3 (except from O'Hare, where it costs $5) and includes
two transfers; per bus, it is $2.25.
» On the train, you must use a Ventra Ticket, which is sold from vending machines at
train stations. You can also buy a Ventra Card, aka a rechargeable fare card, at stations. It
has a one-time $5 fee that gets refunded once you register the card. It knocks 50¢ off the
cost of each ride.
» On buses, you can use a Ventra Card or pay the driver with exact change.
» Unlimited ride passes (one-/three-day pass $10/20) are also available. Get them at rail
stations and drug stores.
Metra commuter trains ( www.metrarail.com ; fares $2.75-$9.25, all-weekend pass $7) have 12
routes serving the suburbs from four terminals ringing the Loop: LaSalle St Station, Mil-
lennium Station, Union Station and Richard B Ogilvie Transportation Center (a few
blocks north of Union Station).
PACE ( www.pacebus.com ) runs the suburban bus system that connects with city trans-
port.
TAXI
Cabs are plentiful in the Loop, north to Andersonville and northwest to Wicker Park/
Bucktown. Flagfall is $3.25, plus $1.80 per mile and $1 per extra passenger; a 15% tip is
expected.

America's 'Mother Road' kicks off in Chicago on Adams St, just west of Michigan
Ave. Before embarking, fuel up at Lou Mitchell's ( Click here ) near Union Station.
After all, it's 300 miles from here to the Missouri state line.
Sadly, most of the original Route 66 has been superseded by I-55 in Illinois,
though the old road still exists in scattered sections, often paralleling the inter-
state. Keep an eye out for brown 'Historic Route 66' signs, which pop up at crucial
junctions to mark the way.
Our first stop rises from the cornfields 60 miles south in Wilmington. Here the
Gemini Giant - a 28ft fiberglass spaceman - stands guard outside the Launching
