Drinking & Nightlife
During the long winters, Chicagoans count on bars for warmth. The usual closing time is
2am, but some places stay open until 4am. In summer many bars boast beer gardens.
Clubs in the Near North and West Loop tend to be cavernous and luxurious (with dress
codes). Clubs in Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village are usually more casual.
The Loop & Near North
Restaurants such as the Gage, Billy Goat Tavern and Purple Pig (see Eating) make fine
drinking destinations, too.
Signature Lounge LOUNGE
( www.signatureroom.com ; 875 N Michigan Ave; drinks $6-16; from 11am; Red Line to Chica-
go) Have the Hancock Observatory view without the Hancock Observatory admission
price. Grab the elevator up to the 96th floor and order a beverage while looking out over
the city. Ladies: don't miss the bathroom view.
Berghoff BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.theberghoff.com ; 17 W Adams St; 11am-9pm Mon-Sat; Blue or Red Line to Jackson)
The Berghoff was the first spot in town to serve a legal drink after Prohibition (ask to see
the liquor license stamped '#1'). Little has changed around the antique wood bar since
then. Belly up for frosty mugs of the house-brand beer and order sauerbraten from the
adjoining German restaurant.
