In-Depth Information
Regions at a Glance
New York City is the East's hub. More than eight million inhabitants live in
this megacity, a world center for fashion, food, arts and finance. The crowd
thins out in neighboring New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where beaches,
mountains and literal horse-and-buggy hamlets join the landscape. New
England arches north to rocky shores, clapboard fishing villages and Ivy
League universities.
The Capital Region begins the march south through voluptuous valleys and a slew of
historic sites. By the time you reach the true South, the pace has slowed, pecan pie tempts
on the table and bluesy tunes drift from juke joints. Surreal Florida brings on mermaids,
manatees, Mickey Mouse and Miami, while the sensible Great Lakes region prefers bur-
gers and beer with its natural attractions.

Home to the Met, MoMA and Broadway - and that's just New York City. Buffalo, Philad-
elphia and Pittsburgh have also world-renowned cultural institutions, as well as bohemian
enclaves with live music scenes.
