In-Depth Information
Adventure Cat
Centuries of sailors are right: there's no better view of San Francisco than from its silvery
bay, especially on a sunset sail. After seeing the historic ships of the San Francisco Mari-
time National Historic Park, hulking modern cruise boats seem to lack that easy grace and
sense of adventure - but you can still sail off into the sunset with Adventure Cat (
415-777-1630; www.adventurecat.com ; Pier 39; adult/child $35/15, sunset cruise $50) . The catamaran cruises
offer sweeping views, trampolines between hulls for bouncy kids and windless cabins in
case of fog (dress warmly). Three daily cruises depart March to October; weekends only
in November.
Red & White Fleet
No need to fear the fog on bay cruises with this crew - one-hour tours are available, and
alcohol served on board takes the edge off chilly days. Red & White Fleet (
415-673-2900; www.redandwhite.com ; Pier 43½; adult/child $28/18) audiotours provide narrative in mul-
tiple languages from the comfort of indoor decks, but for unbeatable views of the Golden
Gate Bridge from water level, brave the wind and sit on the outdoor upper deck. Raise a
toast underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and it's bound to come true…especially if your
wish is another drink.
Top Tips
Afternoon fog blows in around 4pm, sometimes earlier in summer. Carry a jacket and don't wear shorts, except
in a rare heat wave.
Most people cover waterfront attractions on foot or by bike - wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.
Fisherman's Wharf is most popular with families, who pack the waterfront by early afternoon. To dodge the
crowds, arrive at Pier 43½ seafood shacks early for lunch and visit the USS Pampanito and Aquatic Park Bath-
house in the afternoon.
Take a Break
Snack shacks line the Pier 39 boardwalk and flank picnic benches at Pier 43½, including Salty's Famous Fish-
wich ( Click here ). The best sweet treats are at Ghirardelli Sq, including Kara's Cupcakes ( Click here ) .
