In-Depth Information
San Francisco Carousel
Chariots await to whisk you and the kiddies past the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and
other SF landmarks hand-painted onto this Italian carousel ( www.pier39.com ; Pier 39; admission
$3; 11am-7pm; ) , twinkling with 1800 lights. Old-timey organ carnival music inspires
goofy sing-alongs on the four-minute ride - and it's loud enough to drown out tiny tots
clinging for dear life to high-stepping horses.
San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park
'Aye, she's a beauty,' you'll growl like a salty dog once you've visited the historic ships
( www.nps.gov/safr ; adult/child $5/free; 9:30am-5pm Oct-May, to 7pm Jun-Sep) open as museums along
Hyde St Pier - especially elegant 1891 schooner Alma and iconic c 1890 steamboat
Eureka . Other boats resemble giant bath toys, including steam-powered paddlewheel tug-
boat Eppleton Hall and triple-masted, iron-hulled 1886 British Balclutha , which hauled
coal to San Francisco via Cape Horn.
