Fisherman's Wharf & the Piers
The waterfront that today welcomes families fresh off the boat from Alcatraz
tours was a dodgy dock area during California's Gold Rush. After the 1906
earthquake and fire, a retaining wall was built, and Sunday strollers gradually re-
placed drifters and grifters along Embarcadero boardwalks. But Wild West man-
ners prevail on Pier 39, where sea lions snore and belch like drunken sailors
dockside.
