Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans SF
Doesn't matter where you're from, who you love or who's your daddy: if you're
here and queer, welcome home. Singling out the best places to be out in San
Francisco is almost redundant. Though the Castro is a gay hub and the Mission is
a magnet for lesbians, the entire city is gay-friendly - hence the number of out
elected representatives in City Hall.
GLBT Nightlife
New York Marys may label SF the retirement home of the young - the sidewalks do roll up
early - but honey, SF's drag glitter nuns need some beauty rest between throwing Hunky
Jesus contests and running for public office. Most thump-thump clubs are concentrated not
in the lesbian-magnet Mission or historic gay Castro, but in SoMa warehouses, where dan-
cing queens, playbois and leather scenesters can make some noise. In the 1950s, bars eu-
phemistically designated Sunday afternoons as 'tea dances,' appealing to gay crowds to
make money at an otherwise slow time - and Sundays remain SF's busiest.
SF Pride Month
No one shows Pride like San Francisco. The world's most extravagant celebration lasts all
of June, kicking off with 200 film screenings at the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
( www.frameline.org ) , gearing up with Dyke March & Pink Saturday ( www.dykemarch.org ) and
ending in the exhilarating, 1.2-million-strong Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Pride Parade (
415-864-3733; www.sfpride.org ) .
