Bob Kaufman Alley
Quiet Bob Kaufman Alley is named for the legendary streetcorner poet who co-founded
Beatitudes magazine in 1959, but took a vow of silence after Kennedy's assassination. He
didn't speak again until the Vietnam War ended, when he walked into a North Beach cafe
and recited 'All Those Ships that Never Sailed': 'Today I bring them back/Huge and
transitory/And let them sail/Forever.'
Caffe Trieste
Order an espresso, check out the opera on the jukebox and slide into the back booth under
the Sicilian mural, where Francis Ford Coppola drafted The Godfather . Caffe Trieste (
Click here ) has been a neighborhood institution since 1956, with the local characters and
bathroom-wall poetry to prove it.
