In-Depth Information
SLA Safehouse
At 1235 Masonic Avenue , you might once have glimpsed the Simbionese Liberation
Army. Apparently this was once a safehouse where the SLA is believed to have held Patty
Hearst, the kidnapped heiress turned revolutionary bank robber.
Grateful Dead House
Pay your respects to the former flophouse of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Pigpen and sundry
Deadheads at the Grateful Dead House ( Click here ) at 710 Ashbury St. In October
1967, antidrug cops arrested everyone in it (Garcia wasn't home).
Janis Joplin's Crash Pad
Down the block, 635 Ashbury Street is one of many known Haight addresses for Janis
Joplin, who had a hard time hanging onto leases in the 1960s - but as she sang, 'freedom's
just another word for nothin' left to lose.'
Haight & Ashbury
At the corner of Haight & Ashbury ( Click here ) , the clock overhead always reads 4:20,
better known in 'Hashbury' as International Bong-Hit Time.
Jimi's Jams
The Victorian at 1524 Haight Street was one of the Haight's most notorious hippie floph-
ouses, where Jimi Hendrix jammed and crashed in his 'Purple Haze' days. Fittingly, it is
now a head shop; the next-door music store sells a lot of guitars.
Hippie Hill
Follow the beat of your inner drummer to the drum circle at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate
Park - 40 years since it all began. Notice the singular, shaggy 'Janis Joplin Tree' - squint
hard, and it resembles the singer's wild-haired profile.
