Thanh Long
$$
VIETNAMESE
GOOGLE MAP
Since 1971, San Franciscans have lingered in the Sunset after sunset for two main reas-
ons, both found at Thanh Long: roast pepper crab and garlic noodles. One crab serves two
(market price runs $34 to $40) with noodles ($9), but shaken beef and mussels make a
proper feast. The wine list offers good-value local pairings, especially Navarro's dry
Gewürtztraminer.

Masala Dosa
$
INDIAN
Warm up on the south side of the park with South Indian fare in a mood-lit storefront bis-
tro. The house specialty is paper
dosa
, a crispy lentil-flour pancake served with
sambar
(spicy soup) and chutney - but onion and pea
uthappam
is heartier and equally gluten-
free. Standout mains include chicken Madras rich with coconut milk, and fragrant wild
salmon masala.

Spices
$
The menu reads like an oddly dubbed Hong Kong action flick, with dishes labeled 'ex-
plosive!!' and 'stinky!', but the chefs can call zesty pickled Napa cabbage, silky ma-po
tofu and brain-curdling spicy chicken whatever they want - they're all worthy of exclama-
tion. Cash only.
