The History-Making Castro
Getting There
The Castro is a couple of blocks
west of the Mission between 15th
and 18th Sts.
Within a few years of moving into this quaint
Victorian neighborhood in the 1970s, the Castro's
out-and-proud community elected Harvey Milk as
the nation's first gay official. When AIDS hit, the
Castro wiped its tears and got to work, advocating
interventions that saved lives worldwide. Today the
little neighborhood under the giant rainbow flag is a
global symbol of freedom; come out and see for yourself.
Streetcar Take the scenic
above-ground F line from Down-
town, or underground K, L, and M
lines.
Bus 33 connects to the Upper
Haight and the Mission; 24 runs
up Divisadero St to the Haight.
