In-Depth Information
Culture and community are constantly redefined here, by works like Sayuri Guzman's group portrait of Latinas
connected by their braided hair and Enrique Chagoya's post-9/11 dinosaurs escaping the TV and rampaging
through suburban living rooms.

The city's oldest building and its namesake, the Mission (originally Misión San Francisco
de Asís) was founded in 1776 and rebuilt in 1782 with conscripted Ohlone and Miwok
labor - a graveyard memorial hut commemorates 5000 Native laborers who died in
measles epidemics. Today, the original adobe is overshadowed by the adjoining 1913 ba-
silica, featuring stained-glass windows of California's 21 missions. (

SKATING

Grab air with Thrasher magazine founders and fearless tweens blasting ollies off SF's best
concrete bowls. Downsides: the bathroom is sketchy and graffiti on the concrete can make
for a slippery ride. Wait for a clean area of the bowl to bust big moves, and yield to little
skaters. Mission Skateboards (
