at RN74, a definitive volume that covers obscure Italian and Austrian entries, long-lost
French vintages, and California's most thorough account of cult wines. Settle into a couch
for the duration of your self-guided wine adventure, and don't skip bar menu food pair-

Upstairs at the Mystic Hotel, enter a world of post-apocalyptic Victorian elegance, with
distressed-wood paneling, century-old tile floors, red-velvet sofas, brick walls and gaudy
chandeliers - as though swank squatters took up residence, surviving on champagne cock-
tails and generous punchbowls. Celebrity chef-owner Charlie Palmer expanded the place
with a tavern and meat-heavy menu, but the bar remains the prime draw.

Latin-inspired cocktails (think tequila, Cachaça and Pisco) are made with fresh juice -
there's not even a soda gun behind the bar - at this mixologist's dream bar that's mellow
enough on weeknights for quiet conversation. The all-local crowd includes many off-duty
bartenders - always a good sign. DJs spin weekends. ( www.cantinasf.com ; 580 Sutter St;
