Bar Agricole
BAR
Drink your way to a history degree with well-researched cocktails: Bellamy Scotch Sour
with egg whites passes the test, but Tequila Fix with lime, pineapple gum and hellfire bit-
ters earns honors. This overachiever won a James Beard Award for restaurant design -
don't miss the sleek deck - and serves sophisticated bar bites such as sea-urchin deviled
eggs.

Rickhouse
Like a shotgun shack plunked Downtown, Rickhouse is lined with repurposed whiskey
casks imported from Kentucky, and back-bar shelving from an Ozark Mountains nunnery
that once secretly brewed hooch. The emphasis is on rare bourbon, but authentic Pisco
Punch is served in garage-sale punchbowls.

Local Life
SF POPOs
Above busy Downtown sidewalks, there's a serene world of unmarked public rooftop gardens that put SF's
skyscraper-canyons into proper perspective. They're called 'privately owned public-open spaces,' or POPOs. Local
public-advocacy group SPUR (

)
publishes a complete list; its smartphone app lists them all. Local fa-
