Cable Cars
A creaking handbrake seems to be the only thing between
you and cruel fate as your 15,000lb cable car picks up
speed downhill, careening toward oncoming traffic. But
Andrew Hallidie's 1873 contraptions have held up miracu-
lously well on San Francisco's giddy slopes, and groaning
brakes and clanging brass bells only add to the carnival-
ride thrills. Powell-Mason cars are quickest to reach Fisherman's Wharf; Powell-Hyde cars
are more scenic; and the original east-west California St line is the least crowded.
