Built by an Irish entrepreneur determined to give wayward San Francisco religion in
1854, St Mary's offered confessionals alongside the city's most notorious brothels. The
1906 earthquake destroyed a bordello directly across from the church, making room for St
Mary's Square. Today, skateboarders stealthily ride park handrails while Beniamino Bu-
fano's 1929 statue of Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen keeps a lookout. (
