Tower; eccentric heiress Ms Lillie Hitchcock Coit left a
fortune to build the stark white deco landmark as a monu-
ment to San Francisco firefighters. This concrete projectile
has been a lightning rod for controversy for its colorful,
provocative 1930s Works Project Administration murals -
but there's no debating the merits of the 360-degree panor-
amas from the viewing platform. The climb here along
wooden Filbert St Steps offers staggering adventure, with
wild parrots squawking encouragement.
