In-Depth Information
Plate 23.3 A climax ecosystem of Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga
taxifolia) in the Pacific rain forest of western Canada.
Species diversity is only moderate, as the fir excludes many
other tree species by shading.
1 The less resilient it will be.
2 The greater the change in composition and biomass when a species is removed.
3 The longer the persistence.
4 The less connected it should be, to be stable.
Second, the more connected a community:
1 The more resilient it will be.
2 The more resistant its biomass will be if a species is removed.
3 The longer its persistence.
4 The more likely it is to lose other species if one is removed.
5 The fewer species it must have if it is to be stable.
The fact that different diversity-stability questions elicit conflicting answers goes a long
way to explaining why the debate has been so controversial in the past.
