In-Depth Information
Plate 1 (a) Semi-hard defences, in the form of a sea wall fronted by
reconstructed shingle banks and a tranverse berm (mid-distance)
protecting low-lying farmland and tourist infrastructure at Dinas
Dinlle, on the Irish Sea coast of north-west Wales. (b) Eroding salt
marsh in front of the sea wall protecting the Wentlooge Levels,
south-east Wales; the medieval church of Peterstone Wentlooge can
be seen on the landward side. Reclamation and inundation cycles
have been experienced since Roman times in this part of the Severn
estuary. Managed retreat is now probably precluded by coastal
infrastructure, which includes the obsolete Llanwern steelworks,
new industrial parks and a landfill site.
