In-Depth Information
Plate 15.1 Glaciers and ice shelves of the Antarctic
peninsula, flowing from its 2000 km long mountain spine. In
1995 and 2002, huge parts of the Larsen ice shelf (the largest
on the east coast, marked L ) became detached, adding to
fears of global warming impacts in the Antarctic. Plates
15.1-2 are visible wavelength images from the Advanced
Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) multispectral
scanner of the TIROS-NOAA satellites. Photo: British
Antarctic Survey.
