more reliable information, and are therefore more heavily weighted than
local media alerts in the composite activity score. This “meta-alert” score
is based on the idea that multiple sources of information about a particular
incident provide greater confidence in the reliability of the report than any
one source alone (Brownstein et al. 2008).
In addition to an interactive map, the main page of HealthMap (Figure 6.3)
features an interface with a variety of information boxes. Details such as the
number of active alerts in each country and a list of the most recent alerts in
reverse chronological order are given. Finally, as shown in Figure 6.4, each
alert is linked to a related information window with details on reports of
similar content as well as recent reports concerning either the same disease
or location and links for further research (Keller et al. 2009).
6.5 Goals of HealthMap Program
A primary goal of the HealthMap program is to deliver real-time intelligence
on emerging infectious diseases to a diverse audience (Brownstein et al. 2008).
While some projects such as GPHIN and ProMED work more specifically
