Lead smelting works
This particular little slice of human and environmental tragedy ended when, over time, the
remaining inhabitants of Swaledale found new ways to make a living. Some are dependent
or partially so on tourism and the growing popularity of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk.
We made our way into the large village of Reeth, and began to spend our tourist money on
supplies, bed and breakfast, and the recently unveiled and very satisfying Grouse Ale.
