In-Depth Information
Pete had warned us that Grasmere is very touristy. Those of us who had come from afar
conjured up visions of neon signs, theme parks, perhaps a casino or two. It was a pleasant
relief to find that Grasmere boasts of its connection with poet William Wordsworth, has a
traditional gingerbread shop, several well-equipped hiking stores, a post office with ATM,
and a number of pleasant places to sit and eat. Thirteen well laundered people shared din-
ner and stories that night, unaware that the mountain rescue teams had been called to our
forsaken fells to rescue a group of young people who had strayed into danger in the rain
and the mist.
