the reservoir. Would it work? I breathed a huge sigh of relief when over
a thousand pounds of seawater came rushing down into the tide pool,
turning it white with foam. In a few seconds the water cleared. Not
only was it visually dramatic, but the sea anemones and tide pool fishes
loved it. This wave machine, first turned on in 1964, has been surging
into the tide pool every fifty seconds ever since, and as far as I know
may still be going strong.
The day finally came when the renovation was finished and the aquar-
ium reopened amid much fanfare. The crowds were incredible. I later
heard that we had two and a half million visitors the first year. The
new marine mammal exhibit with the two Pacific white-sided dolphins
and the two harbor seals was a tremendous crowd pleaser, and their
feeding times were always packed. I still enjoy mingling incognito
among the visitors and listening to their exclamations of amazement
at what they are seeing. It's very rewarding to get such enthusiastic re-
sponses to your work. It's a good feeling.
